The easiest and yet most difficult thing to do is to be thankful to God always. When things are going the way we want them to be, we find it easy to give thanks but when they are not, we find it difficult to do so. Think of how easy it is to be thankful to God and be full of songs of praise and adoration when God’s blessings are raining down on you. Then think about your response in those moments when trials and tribulations are your rain drops and nothing seems to be going the way you want them to be?
Often our “natural” response is to sulk and sometimes get so angry with God that we would walk away from Him. Unfortunately, this natural response only worsens the situation because it causes us to see the situation from grim lenses; lenses with no faith and full of fear. That is why James encourages us in James 1:2 to “Count it ALL joy when you go through diverse tests and trials”. Apostle Paul also encourages us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18a [AMP] to “Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstance may be, be thankful and give thanks].”
Being thankful is not necessarily saying “thank you”, but it is being in a state of praise and adoration towards God irrespective of the circumstance we are in. Being thankful comes from the heart and proceeds forth from the mouth and it is something the Holy Spirit can equip us to do. So why do we need to be thankful ALL the time and in ALL circumstances?
- It is the will of God concerning our lives as born again Christians [1 Thessalonians 5:18b]
- It changes the lenses through which we see our circumstances and shifts the focus off our temporary circumstance to the never-changing Ancient of Days [James 1:3-4, Romans 8:18]
- God is working EVERYTHING out for our good [Romans 8:28]
- It confuses the enemy and destroys his work. God inhabits the praises of His people and where His presence is, the enemy and His works CANNOT and will NOT stand. [Psalm 22:3].
As the song writer Don Moen said “Give thanks with a GRATEFUL heart”. If God did not spare Jesus Christ and gave Him freely for us, do you think your problem is too big for him to come through for you? Just give thanks! SHALOM!
