Did God really say?

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you tried to explain to people your biblical stance on a seemingly controversial issue and heard them say “Did God/The Bible really say…?”. And have you found yourself fumbling for words or given in to the opposite argument despite what the Bible says, because you either didn’t know what the Bible said or weren’t fully convinced about it?

Well let’s take a trip to the garden of Eden where the devil tempts Eve by asking ““Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” [Genesis 3:1b]. Yet, if you study the Bible carefully you can see that, that is not the instruction that God told Adam when he gave him dominion over the earth. So what did God really say? “And the Lord God commanded the man, You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” [Genesis 2:16-18, NIV]. Interestingly, there is an iota of truth to what the serpent asked the woman concerning God’s command, but it was a manipulated truth which had misconstrued and contorted God’s words to suit the agenda of the enemy. You might say that was in the case of Eve, but as Christians we are bombarded daily by arguments and questions which ask us, “Did God/The Bible really say …. is wrong?.

Have you ever wondered why the serpent went to Eve and not to Adam? The answer to that lies in whom God gave his direct command to. God had given the instructions to Adam and Eve got those instructions from Adam. As a Christian if you are not fully convinced of the Word of God for yourself through studying the Word and are totally dependent on another person to feed you the Word, you are like Eve and can be easily deceived concerning God’s Word. For such people Apostle Paul says, “By this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, yet here I find you need someone to sit down with you and go over the basics on God again, starting from square one—baby’s milk, when you should have been on solid food long ago! Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways; solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong.” [Hebrews 5:12-14, THE MSG].

In this God fight of faith, you cannot just fight by hearsay of what God’s Word says; you ought to seek the biblical truths for yourself and be fully convinced in your heart about what God’s Word says through the power of the Holy Ghost. Such was the church of Berea that Apostle Paul wrote about them saying, “Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” [Acts 17:11, NIV]. Yet, how many of us search and examine the Word of God  for ourselves?

Bear in mind that the devil is very cunning and resorts to all manner of tricks even concerning God’s word. When he tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he referenced but misquoted the Bible, but Jesus Christ who was prepared and instant in season and out of season knew exactly what God’s Word said and said, “It is written..”. He made no compromise on what God’s Word said and neither did he try to justify or explain it to the enemy. Christ did not try to negotiate the Word of God to suit the enemy or try and sugar coat it; He said it as it was.

So next time you find ourselves in a situation where you are asked “Did God really say?”,  be prepared to say “It is written!”
