There was a time past when we could look up to and emulate political leaders, sportsmen, celebrities etc, but recently media reports have been riddled with news of one role model after another indulging in disappointing activities.
I will go on a limb and speculate that in Apostle Paul’s days things were no different; the Roman and Jewish leaders of that age were doing things which were nothing to write home about. He himself had once been one of such leaders persecuting the church of God until he met the risen Christ. It was this transformation that led him to boldly declare “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” [Hebrews 12:2, NIV]. According to the Webster’s dictionary , one of the definitions of to “fix upon” is “to set firmly in the mind”. Thus when you fix your eyes upon Jesus, you have purposed and resolved in your mind that Jesus is who you are looking at and looking to emulate. When you you come to this place something changes about you; you become a person with a purpose and a goal and a person who cannot be swayed by external circumstances. So it doesn’t matter which political or religious leader comes or goes, which celebrity gets caught for infidelity, drugs, domestic violence, murder or abuse, you are not moved because your eyes are fixed on JESUS! When you get to this place, you make up your mind that no matter how pleasurable your past was, you are not going back and you will rather press on towards the mark and the goal before you. In this place, you come to fully understand and know who you are; a child of God not modeled and fashioned after this world but after the Spirit of God.
In this ever changing world, you will be rest assured in who you have fixed your eyes on because he remains the same, after all he is “the same, yesterday, today and forever” [Hebrews 13:8].
So who are you fixing your eyes and the eyes of your family on? As for mine, we are fixing our eyes on JESUS!
