As Christians we are to offer up sacrifices unto the Lord just as the Israelites did under the old covenant. Unlike those sacrifices which were of bulls and cows we are to offer up spiritual sacrifices because, “you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God” [1 Peter 2:5, NLT].
Therefore as a born again Christian, you are to offer spiritual sacrifices unto God daily which is pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. One of such sacrifices is the lifting up of our hands be it during praise, worship or prayer. The lifting up of hands is not just an action that was conjured by Christians to make Christianity look crazy but it has great significance. The lifting up of hands was done before Christianity was brought into being and we see this when King David says “Let my prayer be set forth as incense before You, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice” [Psalm 141:2, AMP].
The lifting up of hands is likened to the evening sacrifice but what is the evening sacrifice? Among the decrees that God gave to Moses for the Israelites for when they enter the promised land, was the decree of offering sacrifices unto the Lord. “Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘My offering, My food for My offerings made by fire as a sweet aroma to Me, you shall be careful to offer to Me at their appointed time.’ “And you shall say to them, ‘This is the offering made by fire which you shall offer to the Lord: two male lambs in their first year without blemish, day by day, as a regular burnt offering. The one lamb you shall offer in the morning, the other lamb you shall offer in the evening” [Numbers 28:1-4, NJKV].
There are two sacrifices which were to be offered up; the morning and evening sacrifice and both are described as “sweet aroma”. Therefore when you lift up your hands as you praise, worship and pray you are offering up the evening sacrifice to God and offering Him “food” [AMP] which is sweet smelling and pleasing to Him. Now imagine what happens when you do this on a consistent basis (daily).
When the Israelites cross the red sea into the wilderness escaping their slave masters, they were attacked by the Amalekites. The Bible says that “when Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; and when he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands were heavy and grew weary. So [the other men] took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and one on the other side; so his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua mowed down and disabled Amalek and his people with the sword” [Exodus 17:11-13, AMP]. The Israelites secured their victory because of the lifting up of hands, can you imagine what victorious you will gain by doing this daily?
You don’t have to wait to face an Amalek before you offer the evening sacrifice of lifting up on hands to the Lord, offer it daily and secure your victory. Lift up your hands o ye people to the Lord and offer to Him food which is pleasing to Him, for He is great and greatly to be praised.
