Baking is a Science…

cupcakes“Cling to wisdom—she will protect you. Love her—she will guard you.
Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do! And with your wisdom, develop common sense and good judgment” [Proverbs 4:6-7, TLB]

Baking is a science; you have to follow the prescribed recipe and procedure to get your desired outcome. I know this as a Food Scientist but when I set out to learn how to bake, I just didn’t feel like doing that. After all, cooking was an art and I cooked well without recipes, so why couldn’t I do that for baking? That was until I tried things my own way and the first cupcake I made turned out to be a rockbun-mess of inedible hardness. Still I wouldn’t relent in trying to reinvent the wheel and was even more motivated when one of my experiments yielded the desired outcome. Truth be told, I wasted too much time and money and there was also no consistency in my results. This was unfortunate when all I had to do was to follow the recipe and procedures outlined for making cupcakes.

Surprisingly, this is how many of us are living our Christian life – we are winging it and are surprised when we don’t get the desired results or there is no consistency in our walk with God. King Solomon was right when he said “there is nothing new under the sun” [Ecclesiastes 1:9, KJV]. The characters may change but the script as outlined in God’s sovereign Word remains the same. This is why it behooves us to walk in wisdom and just do things God’s way and on His terms; not how we think it should be.

In making a cupcake, there is a reason why you whisk your eggs before adding the flour and if you reverse the order, you would have a different texture to your cupcake. Whisking the eggs allows you to incorporate air to give you a much fluffier and lighter-textured cupcake. Similarly, the Word of God gave birth to you and knows you better than you know yourself. God knows why He asks you to do certain things a certain way, even though you may not agree with or even like it. God is not looking out for you to do things just any way; he is looking for you to do things the excellent way to get excellent results. That is why wisdom is the principle thing to go after because it teaches you to know when and how to do things, and to know when to do those things things. All these are in the Word of God – it is the recipe and procedure for life.

After failing so many times with making a good and consistent cupcake, I repented and stuck to a recipe and procedure to make a vanilla flavored cupcake. Once I perfected that, I then started to experiment with different flavors without even using a recipe. The same applies to your Christian walk, until you get the basic stuff right you would not be able to get the complicated things right. Until you buckle down and dig-in into the Word of God to understand basic doctrines, how can you navigate complex issues of life and make informed and wise decisions consistent with God’s perfect will for your life? Without a solid foundation, it is only a matter of time before the house would crumble in the face of adversity. That is why the Psalmist said “Unless the Lord builds a house, the builders’ work is useless. Unless the Lord protects a city, sentries do no good” [Psalm 127:1, TLB].

God has a prescribed order for how things should be done especially in His Kingdom to get certain results. Get tired of getting tired of doing things your own way and getting undesired results and just yield. Yield to God and His Word and watch Him literally make your life a scrumptious, beautiful and consistent cupcake with your own unique flavor.

    I love the analogy!

And this got me laughing a lot…”That was until I tried things my own way and the first cupcake I made turned out to be a ROCKBUN-MESS OF INEDIBLE HARDNESS.” 😀
