Matthew 26:41 AMP
All of you must keep awake (give strict attention, be cautious and active) and watch and pray, that you may not come into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
We are in a season where we have to be very alert and awake spiritually. In these times you simply cannot afford to be asleep spiritually, else you will be carried along with the gross darkness that seeks to cover the face of the earth.
Jesus knew of the imminent death he was to die and He knew that in order to carry out that purpose, He needed to be strengthened through prayer. He also knew His disciples were going to abandon Him in the day of His betrayal. The Bible says in Matthew 26:31, 35 (NLT) that “On the way, Jesus told them, “Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ “No!” Peter insisted. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same.” The disciples all had good intentions not the desert Jesus and to die with him, but Jesus knew otherwise. Many of us would say the same now if we were told that by Jesus but will that be our actual response in the midst of adversity?
That is why he asked them to awake from their spiritual slumber and to be aware of the times they were in and pray instead of depending on their own strength. Jesus knew that in their spirit they were willing to die with him, but their flesh was weak to carry it out.
How awake are you to what is going on in our world? Ebola, wars, atrocities of all kinds, policies which go against God and the church, school killings, many falling away from the faith… Are you awake to these things or do you see these as being “normal”? No, my brethren they are not. We are in perilous time which require us to watch and pray with all zeal and fervency because we are not wrestling against flesh and blood. We have become a generation of Christians who have become preoccupied with so many things, except what the Master is truly concerned about. When he has asked us to watch and pray we have become busy pursuing mansions, businesses, children, husbands, wives while policies are being rewritten to support unbiblical lifestyles, many souls are perishing.
Jesus is asking, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?” (Matthew 26:40, NLT) because what is going on should move us to our knees to pray now. Even if it is far away from our neighborhoods, we need to pray because Judas and the guards are on their way. NOW is the time to pray – the season we are in is not a season of rest but a seaon of wrestling in the Spirit for the souls of the unsaved and for the state of our world. Now is the time because a time is coming when we will be unable to because, the time would have come for betrayal. “Then he came to the disciples and said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.” (Matthew 26:45, NLT)
