In the famous story of Helen of Troy, the only way the Greeks were able to defeat the Trojans, was to hide inside a wooden horse “peace offering”. For 10 years, the Greeks and their allies had tried to seize the great city of Troy, but to no avail. The gated city of Troy proved too sturdy and their army too well-trained for them. Yet somehow it seemed that the Greeks had been forewarned that it is “by strength shall no man prevail”. So they devised and crafted a huge wooden horse, in which they hid waiting to be taken into the city walls. Once inside, they enacted their revenge against Troy and reduced the city to debris.
The Bible teaches us not to be ignorant of the “wiles” and “stratagems” [2 Corinthians 2:11] of the evil one, who in craftiness lies in wait for a prey to devour. When His first attempt to tempt Jesus did not succeed, we are made aware that “And when the devil had ended every [the complete cycle of] temptation, he [temporarily] left Him [that is, stood off from Him] until another more opportune and favorable time” [Luke 4:13, AMP]. When the enemy realizes that you are strong in faith, strong in the Word and you know who you are, He would leave you for an opportune time. He would leave you for that time when there is a crack in your armour and He can slip things like offense, bitterness, lust, anger in, just like the proverbial trojan horse. And while you go on, unaware that there is an enemy in the camp whom you did not shut down or deal with, he is staging his re-bound attack. As with the men of Troy, he waits for when you become complacent or become confident in your abilities to keep him at bay. While you live on the high of the victory you just gained, the devil is slowly plotting his next attack.
That is why we must always understand that our sufficiency is not of ourselves but of God [2 Corinthians 3:5] and any victory we gain is not by might nor by power but by the Spirit of God [Zechariah 4:10]. Always have at the forefront of your mind that you are solider who must not entangle him/herself in civilian affairs, but must consistently wage a good warfare. Afterall, your enemy the devil is constantly on the prow; there is nothing like vacation time in Christianity or “needing a break” because, he is not taking a break. Although we don’t live our lives in fear of the devil because we know Jesus defeated him and made an open show of him, we must not become complacent.
Understand that his tricks are well thought and laid out plans. With the human eye, his bait may seem innocent like the Trojan horse, but inside are many other well-armed demons ready to launch an attack and to wreak havoc. That is why the Bible tell us to give NO PLACE to the devil and to flee from all appearances of evil. It may not look like evil but once it seems like it or there is any hint of it, flee. Flee from that friendship which seems innocent, but you have never had peace in your heart about. Flee from those forms of entertainment that are slowly trying to lead you back to those addictions Jesus set you free from. Flee from those situations that try to stir up anger, bitterness and unforgiveness in you – have a heart of forgiveness. Flee from those places, books and things that want to derail your walk and relationship with Christ and the significant progress you have made in Him.
There is one thing the devil seeks the most; which is to cause you to lose the fight of faith. It doesn’t matter how long you have been a Christian for, he wants you to give up on your Christianity and your faith in God. It doesn’t matter how long it takes him, he will wait for that opportune moment. 10 years seems like a long time to wait, but the Greeks waited because they had a goal in mind – to defeat and capture Troy. So, just like the Greeks, he will wait and wait even if it takes him to the last breathe of your life, because of his end goal.
Therefore from time to time, evaluate your life. The Bible says if we judge ourselves, we would not be judged. Scrutinize yourself with the mirror of God’s Word and listen for God’s voice attentively. Let Him show you if you have any Trojan horse in your life because, the enemy may already be within.
